Bilaspur is a city in the state of Chattisgarh in Central India. South Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (SECL) a wholly owned subsidiary of Coal India is located there. A large thermal power plant was commissioned few year ago. Over the years the city has seen a steady increase in the population and subsequent growth of real estate. About half a million people live here.

A beautiful river called Arpa runs through the town. It originates north of Bilaspur in Amarkantak hills joins a larger river called Mahanadi downstream. Bilaspur has no sewage system, nor does it have any garbage disposal mechanisms. As Arpa passes through a stretch of about 10km through Bilaspur it gets polluted. Large amounts of sewage and garbage get into the river and its dying a slow death.

This series of images photographed over the 10 Km stretch of Bilaspur, is about the death of yet another river.
